Viognier, Texas, High Cross Vineyard, 2020
The 2020 vintage of the High Cross Viognier is like previous vintages, with consistent yield and quality that produces beautifully structured fruit that doesn’t get over ripe, and therefore out of balance. This unique terroir coupled with technique applied in the winery to build flavors and textures makes this Viognier a real standout. For us, we love how restrained it is. It is nuanced aromatically, with dominant savory and mineral notes, and only with some time in the glass do the tropical fruit and honeyed flower notes reveal themselves. The range of temperature that this wine drinks at is also fascinating. When your drink it cooler than 50-55 F, the wine is bright and fresh, and when it warms to room temperature it takes on a fleshier, more intensely fruited and structured persona that would be ideal for more rich and full-flavored foods.
