Tribal Hill, 'First Vintage' Texas, 2015
20% OFF - Mix & Match Any 6 Bottles and Growlers
Tribal Hill First Vintage is a hidden gem among wines. Hand-crafted by winemaker Chris Caldwell, this wine was made for long term aging, but don’t let that stop you from pulling the cork today. This wine is loaded with flavor and body; notes of violets, brambled blackberries, and baking spice play across the palate accompanied by mouth-watering acidity and elegant tannin. Composed of fruit from around the Texas Hill Country and the Texas High Plains AVAs – this wine shows an incredible balance placing it among the top Texas wines ever made.
2015 Tribal Hill contains 63% Alicante Bouschet, a grape which is little known, but has a rich history in winemaking. Alicante Bouschet is a teinturier grape, meaning that the flesh inside the skin has a red hue – this allows the grape to produce a wine which has deep color and contains deep flavors. Alicante Bouschet also played an important part in United States History – The grape’s thick skin meant that it traveled well via train, so during prohibition, Alicante Bouschet was one of the only grapes used to make wine among families and was also used heavily by the mafia to make bootlegger wine.
Thick skin isn’t the only thing Alicante has going for it, this grape has a racy acid which will bring you back to the glass time and time again, and which makes it a perfect pairing for high-acid foods like a tomato-based stew. Tribal Hill’s first vintage is in short supply – there were only approximately 50 cases produced and Vinovium has the only bottles left.
